Selling Other People’s Products and Services. These businesses can include selling other people’s products and services (affiliate, commission-based online referred sales) or using wholesale suppliers and drop shipments from warehouses to sell your own products. In affiliate sales, people may sell information products – that is, digitally delivered e-books, audio or video recordings, where no physical product is involved at all. Other entrepreneurs use this same approach to promote their own writings and ideas by establishing websites to sell their own e-books (see below).
Common places where people start include www.Clickbank.com and www.CommissionJunction.com. There are dozens of other online affiliate programs (CPA or cost-per-action networks) in which to find other people’s products and services to sell. You serve as the middleman and pay for the advertising. If you learn how to do the advertising profitably, you can achieve a ratio of about 2:1 profit to expenses in this type of work. It requires some credit cards or cash sources to pay up front for the advertising costs online (through services such as Google, MSN, or Yahoo), but most of the affiliate programs pay you your gross earnings at least monthly.
EBay Selling and Auctions. Other people try the route of selling products on eBay or other auction sites. They set up their own online stores in general or specialty areas and learn the game of obtaining products at a discount or whole and re-selling them closer to retail cost. Again, this is a specialty area in which there is much useful information, some free and some paid in training programs.
Marketing Your Own Expertise. Many people become successful in areas of their own expertise, either from their prior career or job activities and skills, or from hobbies or interests. Here a clear definition of you, your niche or target market, and the form of products or services you want to provide is essential. You may use your web presence to create a branded impression of you and your work, to promote credibility, to increase accessibility of information about you and your business 24/7. Consultants, coaches, health care providers, lawyers, accountants, and many other professionals use websites in this manner. Many such individuals also create whole businesses out of presenting information in which they have expertise to people who want/need it, e.g., through books, e-books, teleseminars, live seminars, audio and video products.
Marketing Your Own Business. It is crucial for anyone in business to use the internet for promoting their business, even if they have a brick-and-mortar store or office. But, beyond that, many entrepreneurs are finding ways to establish small home-based businesses online that have no actual physical place (other than your home address or a post office box).
Overall Comments. As with many home business opportunities, it is worth investing in yourself to take training programs. Many of the most successful gurus in any of these areas spend thousands of dollars annually on improving their knowledge. At that stage, they pick up little pearls or tidbits of valuable ideas to try out. But, for the newbie, to avoid wasting your more scarce dollars and time (especially if you have mostly had jobs in companies and have not run a real small business of your own), training is essential.
