Multi-Level Marketing or MLM (also called network marketing) is one of the oldest forms of home businesses. Many variations of MLM/network businesses exist. Most want you to buy product on an ongoing basis and/or to pay an entry fee for rights to use their marketing materials and membership benefits. MLMs involve a wide range of products and services, ranging from cosmetics to nutritional supplements to home care products to consumer purchase discounts.
The basic idea is usually that you need to bring in more people into your “downline” who also buy into the business and promote it to their own “downline”. Some people become very successful with these types of businesses; many others join but make no money. You want to invest your time and money with a solid business model, and this will take some research. Some experts say that you can do better financially to get into a newer MLM so that you are higher in the hierarchy of the overall company. Overall, consider MLM is you either like doing person-to-person sales and persuasion or want to learn how to do effective sales to other people. These are people-oriented businesses and rely on your ability to bring other people into the same business. You still interact with people, but the interactions are less personalized (for the most part).
